Five seats on the Klamath Community College Board of Education will be up for election this May, and the deadline for candidates to file a declaration of candidacy or nominating petition is fast approaching.

According to the Klamath County Clerk’s Office, Zones 1, 3, 5, 6 and 7 are all up for election this spring. In Zone 1, which is made up of much of the Pacific Terrace and downtown areas, incumbent Board Member Dr. Edward McClure has filed for reelection and is as yet the only candidate to file for that seat.

Michael Fitzgerald, the incumbent for Zone 3, has also filed for reelection. Zone 3 is comprised of much of southeast Klamath Falls and the Henley areas.

No candidates have yet filed for either Zone 5 or Zone 6, and Tommy Wells, the incumbent from Zone 5, has indicated that he plans to retire from the Board of Education. Zone 5 represents Lakeshore Drive, the Lynnewood and Running Y neighborhoods and the Orindale area heading toward Keno. “Tommy has been a great board member for many years,” said KCC Board Chair Jeff Ball. “We wish him well, and are confident that a capable replacement will surface during the election.”

In Zone 7, Klamath Falls resident Austin A. Folnagy is the lone candidate that has filed the necessary paperwork, according to information from the Klamath County Clerk’s Office. Zones 6 and 7 are at large and represent the entire KCC Service District.

Prospective candidates have until March 21 to file for candidacy with the Klamath County Clerk’s Office. “We want to make sure the public knows that these seats are up for election and that the deadline to file is approaching,” Ball said. “KCC is here for the community, and it’s important that community members understand the process and have an opportunity to participate if they so desire.”

Anyone seeking more information on any of the Board of Education seats that are up for election should contact Board Secretary Dawn McLing for more information. She can be reached at 541-882-3521 or via email at mcling@klamathcc.edu.
