For the past two years, students have been able to take individual classes in web design through Klamath Community College. Now they will be able to earn a Career Pathways certificate in this field.
With final approval from the Oregon State Board of Education granted earlier this month, the first Web Design Certificates will be awarded in June 2012.

The certificate is designed to help students get started on a career path or advance in a current occupation while pursuing a program of greater length. Students who complete the required 24 credits will emerge from the certificate program with a well-rounded education extending far beyond web design alone. A classroom-based lecture and lab format enables students to learn necessary but practical skills in website design. The complete array of skills taught in the various courses that make up the certificate include learning best practices in website design and layout, authoring database-driven sites, and HTML, Javascript and Cascade Style Sheets. In addition, students learn how to get results and drive traffic to sites while using social media tools.

The goal, according to Business and Management Department Chair Linda Davenport, is to “graduate students who will be immediately employable in the web design field.”

The coursework includes extensive hands-on work, which will leave students prepared for multiple potential career paths. “Students who complete this program will leave KCC with the skills required to design and create their own business or personal website, build websites as a contract web designer, or go right to work for a company of any size,” said instructor Doug Kirby. “We’ve done extensive research, and this is a field that is in high demand, particularly in the Klamath Falls area.”
Kirby has been involved in the program since first relocating to Klamath Falls from the Portland area, where he taught in the web design program at Portland Community College for eight years. “I realized soon after moving to Klamath Falls that there was nothing like this available in the area, yet the local business community was clamoring for professionals with these skills,” he said.
