Klamath Community College President Dr. Roberto Gutierrez has been selected to address other college presidents at this year’s American Association of Community Colleges National Convention. The convention, which will take place in San Francisco April 20 - 23, is an annual meeting that is “among the largest and most dynamic gatherings of educational leaders, attracting over 2,000 community college presidents and senior administrators, as well as international educators, representatives of business/industry and federal agencies,” according to the organization’s website.

Dr. Gutierrez has been tabbed to address the expectations, challenges and surprises that first-year presidents can expect to encounter in their new positions. “It’s an honor to be asked to speak at this conference,” Dr. Gutierrez said. “But this isn’t just about me. I’m confident that I’ve been asked to speak because KCC has been recognized nationally for some of the student success initiatives that we have implemented this academic year.”

Those student success initiatives include mandatory new student orientation, mandatory advising and the elimination of late registration, among other things. “We are early adopters in some of these areas,” Dr. Gutierrez said, “and other community college leaders want to know how we did it and what the early results are showing.”

The invitation to address the AACC National Convention is one that Dr. Gutierrez did not want to pass up. “It is very important to me to make sure we are taking care of business at home before devoting a lot of time to other ventures,” he said, “but the opportunity to address the AACC National Convention is one that does not come up very often. I feel students all over the nation will benefit from sharing what we have accomplished at KCC with other college administrators.”

Dr. Gutierrez will present “Lessons Learned – The First Year” in conjunction with Stelfanie Williams, President of Vance-Granville Community College in North Carolina.
