Klamath Community College has been granted permission to offer two associate degree programs and one certificate program entirely online. The programs, which will feature Associate of Applied Science degrees in Business Administration and Accounting, as well as a Certificate of Completion program in Web Design, will be available starting with the fall 2013 term.

The college’s accrediting body, the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities, sent a letter advising KCC of the approval April 29. “It is noted that the proposed online delivery of programs is in concert with Klamath Community College’s mission and core themes, in particular, to better serve the widespread and rural communities of South Central Oregon,” the letter stated.
The ability to earn an associate degree entirely through online work is especially vital for those who, for a variety of reasons, may not otherwise be able to attend college. “There are many people in our service district who are place-bound, working fulltime or odd hours, raising children, or for other reasons are unable to attend traditional college courses,” said KCC President Dr. Roberto Gutierrez. “Having full degree programs available entirely online gives these individuals and others the opportunity to still pursue a college degree.”

The programs are also currently available through traditional courses, and that will not change, according to Dr. Gutierrez. “These online programs are not being implemented at the expense of our existing offerings,” he said. “Rather, they will serve to augment and bolster the great work we are already doing in the classroom at KCC.”

KCC’s distance education coordinator, Pat Hockersmith, is beginning to compile of list of interested students. He can be reached at 541-880-2328, or hockersmith@klamathcc.edu.
