2008 OCCA Scholars
The Oregon Community College Association (OCCA) represents the
seventeen publicly chartered community colleges. OCCA annually
honors selected students from each of the community colleges in
Oregon as Outstanding Student Scholars. Recipients will be
eligible for scholarships as a result of being chosen for this award.
Klamath Community College’s OCCA Scholars were chosen from a
list of very strong candidates. The winners are Susan Cantrell and
Suzie Cummins, and each has a very compelling story about their
community college experience.
Susan Cantrell
"Five years ago, I started my life over. I was at a dead end.
I was basically just taking up space. I decided that I was
going to make a big change in the way I lived my life.
Going to college has been a life changing and rehabilitating
experience for me. It has brought much personal growth
for me as well. My goal is to help people and also have a
good job at the same time. KCC has pointed me in that
direction. I am no longer the person I was when I first
started college. My dedication to completing my goals
through KCC has been helped by the totally dedicated
instructors and staff at the college. I now have something
to look forward to. This was not the case five years ago."
Suzie Cummins
"I love to inspire people. Many wonderful people at KCC have
inspired me to push on and explore my dreams. So in that, I
owe the terrific faculty and staff at KCC so many thanks.
The past three years have been full of trials and tribulations.
But, thankfully, I have a wonderful support 'team' around
me packed full of cheerleaders. I am blessed for every one of
them.
The wonderful experience and skills that I have gleaned from
Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) have given me the confidence
to achieve my dreams. I led my team to Regional Competition
in 2007, which was the most frightening and rewarding thing
I have ever done. The experiences I have had at KCC I will
cherish forever."
