Students got the lowdown on more than a dozen public and private four year colleges Jan. 20 during Oregon Transfer Days in the Klamath Community College commons.

For students, it was a chance to size up the curriculum and degree offerings of schools they might attend after leaving KCC. For colleges, it was an opportunity to woo potential new students by showcasing their programs.

Some of the schools represented were as close as Oregon Institute of Technology. The most distant campus with a booth was Alaska Pacific University of Anchorage.

APU spokesman Jason Frost answered lots of questions about lifestyle differences between Klamath Falls and Alaska, admitting, “It’s a big transition.” But he emphasized that Alaska’s economy has survived the economic downturn better than most states, giving APU students a good chance at employment after graduation.

Meanwhile, KCC student Susan Kester was doing research closer to home. She talked with Oregon State University representative Mary Caughey about the school’s program in natural resources.

University of Oregon admissions counselor Cheryl Kline discussed a variety of curriculum areas with those who browsed at her booth. Students wanted to know how their transfer degrees would fit into such programs as pre-law, geography, education and journalism.

Those interested in pursuing criminal justice headed to the Western Oregon University booth because that school offers a master’s program in criminal justice.

Oregon Transfer Days is sponsored annually by the Oregon Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers.

Other schools that were at KCC included Concordia University, Corban College, Northwest Christian University, Oregon College of Art and Craft, Portland State University, Oregon College of Oriental Medicine, Southern Oregon University, and the Art Institute of Portland.
