Veteran's Services

KCC’s Veterans’ Services Representative helps veterans and their eligible dependents apply for and receive Veterans Administration (VA) educational benefits. Recipients of VA benefits must achieve satisfactory academic progress toward their educational goal.

Veterans must abide by VA regulations regarding notification of any change in academic program/major, change in course registration, course withdrawal, and transfer credits from other institutions. Failure to notify Veterans Services may result in a loss of benefits. Call 541-882-3521 for more information. For information regarding benefits and/or payment problems, please call the Portland regional office at 1-800-827-1000.

Eligibility
Students may establish eligibility for full-time veterans benefits by taking 12 or more credits, three-quarter time benefits with 9 to 11 credits and half-time benefits with 6 to 8 credits. If the student attend less than half-time, only tuition benefits are available.

Students taking GED or high school equivalency courses must attend class 18 or more hours per week to be considered full-time.

If the student is a veteran or other military personnel, they should check with the Student Services office regarding procedures for acceptance of military credits.

The Financial Aid Specialist has the necessary paperwork to establish eligibility for educational benefits. Application for benefits may also be completed online at www.gibill.va.gov. Students must provide documents verifying prior education and military service, or benefits will be delayed. Eligibility for benefits and monthly payments is done through the Veterans Administration Educational Office.

After certification by the College and the VA you must:

  1. Maintain satisfactory progress [as described on this page].
  2. Enroll only in courses that are part of the certified program. Enrolling in classes outside of the certified program, will make the student liable for overpayments from the VA.
  3. Complete at least the minimum hours for which they were certified. Overpayments will occur if they enroll in, but do not complete the credits for which they were certified.
  4. Inform the VA Office immediately of changes in schedule, address, or dependents, as it takes up to six weeks to process the changes.
  5. Chapter 30 recipients must certify their college attendance monthly with the VA Office. [on the VA electronic system]
Students receiving veteran’s benefits and are enrolled at least three-quarter time [9 to 11 credits or more] may be eligible to apply for Work Study at a VA Medical Center or with the Oregon State Employment Division.

Satisfactory Progress Requirement
VA regulations require that students maintain a 2.0 GPA in their declared major for satisfactory academic progress while they are receiving educational benefits from the VA. The VA will not pay for “W” [Withdrawal] “I” [Incomplete] or “NP” [No Pass] grades. Be aware of these conditions to avoid VA overpayments or possible termination of benefits.
