Transferring Credits
Students seeking to complete the first two years of a four-year baccalaureate degree will be engaged in Transfer,
or Lower Division Collegiate, course work. Depending on their chosen program, they may transfer individual courses
or entire degrees.
Up to 45 professional-technical credits may be transferred in certain programs to the Oregon University System
institutions on a block transfer agreement. It is recommended that students coordinate with advisors at the
baccalaureate degree granting institution and KCC regarding academic requirements.
Institutions of the Oregon University System will accept 108 transfer credits from Oregon community colleges.
This practice allows students to carry up to 18 hours per quarter during their freshman and sophomore years.
Any credit earned after completing 108 quarter hours must be earned at a four-year institution to count toward a
baccalaureate degree. Exceptions to this rule require permission from the academic department and the Registrar’s
Office at the four-year institution. KCC does not assume responsibility for acceptance of additional credit by
another school.
Transfer Credit Acceptance/Application
Students wishing to transfer credits to KCC from another institution, be aware of the following policies:
- Credits are accepted only from regionally accredited colleges and universities, or as listed below.
- An official transcript listing the credits must be sent to the KCC Student Services office. Once the transcript is received, it will not be released to a non-contracted third party [including other institutions]. All transcripts are to be received by the end of the second quarter of attendance at KCC. If a transcript is not received by the end of the second term, credits at previous institutions may not apply toward any degree or certificate at KCC. Credits earned shall be entered on the students transcript after they have earned a minimum of 12 credits at KCC.
- Credits older than seven years are not accepted for application toward degree requirements at KCC.
- A grade of “D” is not accepted in transfer work if the specific program or degree requires a grade of “C” or better.
- Only credits which carry transfer credit to other state colleges and universities in Oregon will be accepted for the AA-OT degree.
- Credit for military training is granted on the basis of recommendations by the American Council on Education [ACE] as contained in the “Guide to the Evaluation of Educational Experiences in the Armed Services.” KCC accepts credits from the military DANTES and USAFI programs, as recommended by the ACE. All military credits are to be listed on a military transcript.
- Army: Army/ACE Registry System [AARTS]
- Air Force: Community College of the Air Force
- Marines: Individual Training Standards System, Maintenance Training Management and Evaluation Program [ITSS MATMEP]
- Navy: Navy Occupation/Training and Awards History
- Credit for College Level Examination Program [CLEP] and the Advance Placement Tests are granted based on acceptable scores.
- KCC does not participate in a Credit for Prior Learning [CPL] program, where credit is granted for life experiences or job skills. Students may seek substitutions in AAS degree or one year Certificate programs on the basis of prior academic experience or challenge exams. Contact the lead faculty member or a Student Services Representative regarding substitutions.
- Students who have received a bachelor degree equal to or greater than an associate’s degree, you are generally considered to have completed the general education requirements for an associate’s degree.
- Transfer credit does not count for residency purposes.
- Transfer credit must be deemed appropriately applicable for a student’s
educational goals as well as the institution’s programs.
- Further information on this process is found in the Academic Policy Handbook located in the LRC
