Competencies ~ Requirements

Associate of Science: AS

The Associate of Science [AS] is designed for students who are planning to transfer credits to a baccalaureate degree program for which the AA-OT degree is not appropriate. The AS program allows greater flexibility in course selection but does not guarantee that the student will have all lower division comprehensive and General Education requirements transfer to the intended baccalaureate degree program. Therefore, students are advised to work closely with their receiving institution to ensure proper transfer of credit from KCC to the baccalaureate-granting institution.

All candidates for the AS must satisfactorily complete all the requirements of the degree including a minimum of 90 credits, 65 of which are in the General Education Component. These courses and credit totals are as follows:

Student Success 3 credits
Information Systems 4 credits
Oral Communications 3 credits
Writing 9 credits
Health and Wellness 3 credits
Computation 4 credits
Arts and Letters 9 credits
Social Sciences 9 credits
Science/Math/Computer Science 24 credits

For courses to meet general education requirements, they must be collegiate-level numbered [e.g. 100]. Courses numbered below the 100 level do not apply to the degree but are prerequisites to degree requirements.

Basic Competencies
Candidates must demonstrate competency in collegiate-level mathematics, reading, writing, and information technology within seven years before completing the program. Competency in mathematics is demonstrated by completing College Algebra [MTH 111] or passing any math course which has a prerequisite of MTH 111. Note: The Elementary Math sequence does not apply to AS requirements. Competency in writing and reading is demonstrated by passing any writing course which has an English Composition [WRI 122] prerequisite. Competency in Information Systems is demonstrated by passing any four-credit computer course with a CIS prefix. Computer application courses generally do not apply.
