Associate of Applied Science: AAS
Klamath Community College offers seven Associate of Applied Science Degree programs and thirteen one-year
certificates. These certificates and degrees are offered to allow the development of skills ranging from
initial job entry to professional development.
One-year Certificates may serve as a fast track leading to entry-level employment or a ladder to the AAS
degree program.
Degree candidates must complete a program of approved coursework in the Major field. The program
descriptions in this catalog contain specific coursework requirements. Furthermore, all AAS candidates
must satisfactorily complete all the requirements of the degree including a minimum of 90 credits, 40 of
which are in the General Education Component, except for the AAS-TS [Associate of Applied Science -
Technical Studies], where the general education requirement is 47 credits. The General Education requirement
allows the flexibility to continue professional development later, by applying the basic skills gained to
more in-depth study. These courses and their corresponding credit values are as follows:
| Student Success | 3 credits |
| Information Systems | 4 credits |
| Oral Communications | 3 credits |
| Writing | 9 credits |
| Health and Wellness | 3 credits |
| Computation | 4 credits |
| Arts and Letters | 3 credits |
| Social Sciences | 3 credits |
| Math/Science/Computer Science | 8 credits |
For courses to meet general education requirements, they must be collegiate-level numbered
[e.g. 100]. Courses numbered below the 100 level do not apply to the degree but are prerequisites to
degree requirements.
Basic Competencies
Candidates must demonstrate competency in collegiate-level mathematics, reading, writing, and information
technology within seven years before completing the program. Competency in mathematics is demonstrated by
completing College Algebra [MTH 111] or passing any math course which has a prerequisite of MTH 111. Note:
The Elementary Math sequence may only be used in the Educational AAS program. Competency in writing and
reading is demonstrated by passing any writing course which has an English Composition [WRI 122] prerequisite.
Competency in Information Systems is demonstrated by passing any four-credit computer course with a CIS or
CSC prefix. Computer application courses generally do not apply.
Other Requirements
- Candidates for the degree must earn a minimum of 90 and maximum 108

two terms and accumulate at least 30 credit hours of satisfactory work to

be applied to the 30 credit-hour residency requirement. This requirement
may not be waived.

- Developmental Education courses or courses used to prepare for collegiate courses do not apply to this degree but are prerequisites to degree requirements.
Successful pursuit of this degree requires students to possess collegiate skills in reading,
communication, computation, and critical thinking. To acquire that competency, it is highly
recommended that students complete precollegiate courses to gain these skills in the first
terms of their program.
