Course Numbering
KCC uses the course numbering system found throughout the Oregon University System and other state community colleges. Course numbers 100-299 are intended as transferable credit classes [often a grade of “C” or better is required] or as Professional Technical courses. Normally, 200 numbers are sophomore courses which generally require collegiate reading, writing, and/or math skills. Professional-technical courses are generally not designated as transfer courses. However, there are exceptions, and students should consult the advisor and the academic department concerned, as well as the transfer institution for transferability of these courses.

Credit courses at KCC have a six-entry alpha-numeric sequence for coding purposes. The alpha-numeric system can be grouped into three parts:

  1. The alpha represents a three-letter abbreviation of the subject matter [e.g., MTH= Math, WLD = Welding].
  2. The first digit represents the type and level of the course: Course numbers beginning with “zero” are non-collegiate level; courses numbered “one” generally indicate freshman-level coursework; and “two” generally indicates sophomorelevel coursework. The number, “seven” indicates a non-credit course.
  3. The last two digits identify the course. Generally, “80” courses [xxx x80] are Cooperative Work Experience; “98” courses [xxx x98] are Independent Study courses; and “99” courses [xxx x99] are Special Studies courses.
