Grading System
Grades are issued at the end of each term. For grade point average [GPA] purposes,
points are assigned as follows:
| GRADE | POINTS | DEFINITION |
| A | 4 | Superior Performance |
| B | 3 | Quality Performance |
| C | 2 | Competent Performance |
| D | 1 | Deficient performance but passing |
| F | 0 | Failure to meet minimum requirements |
| I | 0 | Incomplete |
| P | 0 | Pass. Acceptable performance |
| NP | 0 | Not Passing |
| NA | 0 | Not Acceptable performance. [Certain courses only] |
| R | 0 | Repeated |
| W | 0 | Withdrawal |
| AUD | 0 | Audit |
Grade Point Average is computed by:
- Multiplying the number of credit hours earned in a course by the number of
points allowed for the grade received
- Adding the total points for all courses
- Dividing this total by the number of credit hours carried for the term. GPA is
usually computed to two decimal places
Pass/No Pass Option
“P” signifies a passing grade was earned. Qualifying credits count toward degrees
and certificates but are not computed in the GPA. Students may exercise the
option for a “pass” rather than a regular grade in the following courses: Physical
education activity courses numbered 185; studio art courses in drawing, calligraphy,
photography, ceramics, sculpture, painting, printmaking; music classes in basic
piano, orchestra, chorus and chorale; and theater courses in acting, lighting, makeup,
and stagecraft. If students choose this option, they must report it to a Student
Services Representative during the first week of the term. Courses in the major
field of study should not be taken with the “pass” option. Some developmental
courses, numbered below 100, could also be graded on a pass/no pass basis.
Grading options are outlined in the course syllabus.
Incomplete
If a student has completed a majority of the assigned coursework at a satisfactory
level of quality but some essential course requirement has not been completed [for
reasons acceptable to the instructor], a report of Incomplete [I] may be given and
additional time granted for completion.
Students must initiate the Incomplete Grade Contract process, except in
emergency cases. The form must be filled out and signed by both the student and
the instructor, but only the instructor may submit the form to the Student Services
Office. Because a substantial amount of completed coursework is required for
“Incomplete” eligibility for the student, a course repeat is not a legitimate make-up
assignment and will not be accepted by the Student Services Office.
Course requirements must be completed within a maximum of one term after the
end of the term for which the “I” grade is received. Upon completion of course
requirements, the instructor will assign a grade using the Change of Grade form
to be obtained and returned by the instructor to the Dean for Learning Services.
If the course requirements are not completed after one term, the grade becomes a
grade of “F” on the transcript unless the course is repeated.
An “I” does not entitle a student to repeat a course without paying tuition.
