An annual celebration in many regions of Mexico, Dia de los Muertos (“Day of the Dead”) honors those who have passed away. Elaborate altars with pictures of the deceased, including ofrendas of their favorite foods, drinking, and games help family and friends preserve their memory. Part of the festivities can include visiting cemeteries where the deceased have been laid to rest, cleaning their grave markers, repainting crosses, and leaving fresh flowers. This time of year is recognized by many cultures as a special time when the living have the chance to commune with the dead.
