The program also provides prior learning credit and extended learning opportunities for persons previously or currently employed in related professions.

Appearance helps promote a sense of trust in the client/service provider relationship. Professional appearance includes dressing appropriately for the situation. The uniform and/or a lab coat over professional “business attire” is to be worn when picking up clinical/client assignments. “Business attire” does not include jeans, sweatpants or sweatshirts, t-shirts, tank tops, bare midriff tops, shorts, spandex leggings, miniskirts, or open-toed shoes (including sandals).

Students not in compliance with the dress code will be sent home.

The KCC Cosmetology uniform for lab, classroom and clinical consists of the following:

• A clean, well-pressed uniform with student name badge worn in a visible location.
• Black scrub shirt or blouse. A solid black turtleneck or t-shirt is acceptable to wear under scrub shirt. It must be long enough to tuck into pants. When arms are raised, no abdominal flesh should be visible.
• Black scrub pants or slacks. Pants must sit at the waist, not below. Undergarments should not be visible when bending over or stooping.
• White, black, or neutral-colored socks or hose are to be worn. Support hose are recommended.
• Shoes must be kept clean and in good repair. High heels are not recommended as students will be standing for prolonged amounts of time.
• Black lab coat (optional over scrubs only, non-scrub clothing must be accompanied by a lab coat) may be worn over uniform top. Lab coats must be kept in good repair and if damaged mend them appropriately, no staples or tape.
• No athletic sweatshirts, hooded sweatshirts, sweatpants, workout pants, leggings are allowed.
• No ripped, frayed, or worn-out pants are allowed. Pants cannot be long enough that they drag on the ground.
• No hats or beanies are to be worn in any classroom or clinic area.

Additional guidelines:

• Hair must be clean, neatly combed, and controlled. Beards and mustaches must be clean, neat, and/or closely cropped.
• Underwear must be worn but must not be visible through the scrubs and/or pants. 
• No smoking is permitted while in uniform.
• Attention to oral and personal hygiene is expected. These measures include daily bathing, oral hygiene, and use of deodorant. Odors may be offensive to clients and must be avoided.
• No food, tobacco chewing, or electronic cigarettes are permitted in the salon/clinical area.
• Language used while interacting with guests, instructors and other students must be kept professional. Swearing or derogatory words are not permitted.
• Student stations must be deep cleaned each night prior to leaving.
• All tools, equipment and/or implements must be sanitized and put away each night prior to leaving. Stations and all tools, equipment and/or implements must be kept according to practice standards set forth by Oregon Health Licensing.
• Sitting in hair (hydraulic) chairs, shampoo chairs, lounging on microderm or facial beds are not professional. This equipment is to be used while providing services only.
• Make the most of your education. Lecture/lab/clinic time is for honing your soft skills and techniques and for completing state requirements. Use your time effectively and efficiently.
