What’s the difference between Graduation and Commencement?

Graduation and Commencement mean two different things:

  • Graduation is when you officially complete all of your degree or certificate requirements. The Registrar’s Office reviews your petition to graduate, verifies your classes, and records your credential on your transcript. You can graduate whether or not you attend a ceremony.

  • Commencement is the ceremony we hold each spring to celebrate students who have graduated or are graduating that year. It’s when you walk across the stage in your cap and gown, hear your name announced, and celebrate with family, friends, and the KCC community.

In short: Graduation is the official award of your degree or certificate. Commencement is the celebration of that achievement.
