The Klamath Community College Student Conduct Process (AP 4221 Academic Integrity) includes a section entitled Violation of Academic Integrity Definitions. When a faculty member believes that a student has engaged in behavior included in this procedure, they are both required to participate in the academic integrity process as outlined in the Student Handbook.
Students are subject to disciplinary action if they intentionally or unintentionally get one of the following violations:
Plagiarism
- Plagiarism is defined as the use of work or concepts that are not one’s own without proper attribution or citation
- Presenting someone else's words, ideas, artistry, product, or data as one's own
- Presenting as new and original an idea or product derived from an existing source
Unauthorized Assistance
- Refers to sources of support (for example, Artificial Intelligence [AI]) that have not been specifically authorized by the course instructor(s) in the completion of academic work to be graded
Collusion/Inappropriate Assistance
- Helping another commit an act of academic dishonesty
- Knowingly or negligently allowing your work to be used by others
- It is a violation of Oregon state law to create and offer to sell part or all of an educational assignment to another person (ORS 1.65.114)
Cheating
An act of deceit, fraud, distortion of truth or any unauthorized assistance, such as notes or other academic materials, including the following:
- Use of any unauthorized notes, or other academic material, in taking quizzes, tests, or exams. Relying on the aid of services beyond those authorized by the faculty member in writing papers, preparing reports, solving problems, or carrying out other assignments. Acquiring or viewing, without permission of the instructor, a test, or examination questions or answers, or other academic material.
- Sharing classroom documents, including test items, with other students or with online platforms.
Fabrication/Falsification/Alteration
- Intentional misrepresentation, invention, exaggeration or alteration of information or data, whether written, verbalized or demonstrated
Unauthorized Multiple Submission
- Using any work previously submitted for credit without prior permission of instructor
Sabotage and Tampering
- Intentional altering or interfering with another students’ work
- Intentional tampering of academic resources
All violations will be reported to the Student Conduct Officer. The penalty for first offenses will be determined by the instructor and may include failure of the assignment and, in severe cases, a conduct hearing. Second violations of academic integrity go to the Conduct Officer for action. A second offense may result in a conduct hearing with possible outcomes of course failure, academic dismissal or suspension, and other sanctions.
Students may challenge an instructor’s accusation of academic integrity by submitting a formal student complaint form. These forms are available online via the KCC website or in the lobby of Founders Hall.
