To apply for financial aid, you must submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) every year at www.fafsa.ed.gov
. Before you apply, we recommend that you gather together the documents needed to apply
. In the state of Oregon, this is the only application that you will need for many of the federal and state grants, scholarships, loans, and work-study.
For help with your FAFSA, call 1-800-4FEDAID (1-800-433-3243), Monday through Friday, 8 to 12 am Eastern Time, or Saturday, 9 am to 6 pm Eastern Time. You may also contact our Financial Aid Office at 541-880-2352 or email@example.com
The Financial Aid Office at Klamath Community College may ask you for additional documents after you file your FAFSA. For the 2022-2023 academic year, these documents can be viewed by logging onto your MyKCC account, selecting "Student" then "My Financial Aid." You will then follow the instructions listed on the following page. The processing time for documentation to be processed is two to three weeks.
- It is recommended that you use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool when completing your FAFSA.
- The FAFSA requires tax information from two years prior. You may submit your FAFSA beginning Oct. 1, even if you have not filed taxes by using tax estimates. After filing, you will need to log back into your FAFSA and use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool to update your FAFSA with accurate information.
- If you are eligible to use the data retrieval tool but choose not to, you may need to verify your tax information with an IRS Tax Transcript or a signed copy of the appropriate year tax return.
Applying for alternative student loans
Private loans, also called alternative loans, are non-federal loans by a lender such as a bank or credit union and are available to credit and non-credit students. Private loans are not guaranteed or governed by the U.S. Department of Education. KCC does not keep a preffered lender list. Terms and conditions may vary by each loan lender and agreement.
The lender will use credit history and other factors to determine a student's eligibility. Students are often required to obtain a cosigner. The Financial Aid Office can only certify private loans up to the cost of attendance minus other types of aid. This means that the private loan may not be certified for the amount the lender approves.
Once all required documentation has been submitted to the Financial Aid Office, you should receive your award notification via e-mail within two to three weeks. This award notification will provide you with instructions for accessing the online financial aid portal
and details all federal grant, loans, and other scholarships that you are eligible to receive.
Students may accept or decline aid that has been offered by indicating so on the “Accept Awards” screen. Once you have accepted or declined your aid, the Financial Aid Office will work to process your financial aid funds for the next eligible disbursement.
Before accepting any financial aid funds, it is your responsibility to read through all terms and conditions and other important information on the KCC financial aid webpage. Additional information which must be read can be found in the Financial Aid Information Booklet.
If you are accepting loan funds, you must also complete the Loan Entrance Counseling course and a master promissory note
(MPN) before any loan funds can be disbursed.
Once you have accepted loan funds and you have enrolled in classes, your loan entrance counseling and MPN will be marked as "received" on your MyKCC account within 14 business days
, pending completion.
Once enrolled in classes, accepted aid (excluding work-study which must be earned and scholarships from other agencies for which funds have not been received) will usually be disbursed on the third Tuesday of the term and credited to the student's billing account. Financial aid is automatically used to pay for student charges such as tuition, fees, and book charges. Any accepted funds left over after a student's bill has been paid in full will prompt a financial aid refund. Beginning at 1:30 pm on the third Tuesday of the term, financial aid refund checks will be available for pick up.
If your refund check is not picked up by the end of the term, it will be mailed to the address on file with the Business Office.
For additional information regarding disbursement, please read disbursement information.
