Brandon credits his grandmother with encouraging him to return to school to obtain his GED, high school equivalency diploma.

“I was trying to find work without my diploma for quite some time and not having any luck. Finally, I just decided to go for it,” he said. “And honestly, I’m glad I did.”

All it took was one phone called to KCC, Brandon said, and he was enrolled and had his orientation scheduled.

“At first you may think it’s overwhelming, but it really isn’t. And you can do it all online,” he said. He noted that instructors and tutors were always available to help out when he got stuck or was struggling.

“Getting a GED raised my self-confidence. I feel like I can accomplish anything I put my mind to,” Brandon said. “I was afraid (of failing) which is why I left school in the first place. Coming back and doing it, getting a GED, is one of the most proud moments I’ve had. It is a really boost of confidence.”

Brandon is planning on continuing his education, seeking either an apprenticeship in carpentry or a business management certificate.

“I want to open up a trading card and video gaming shop, where I can share my passion with others.”

“I really feel K-CET is designed to help anyone reach their true potential. It really did that for me. When you do finish the GED you have so many opportunities available to you and KCC is there to help you transition to the next step. And I really respect them for that,” he said.

“If I could just say one message I would say, go for it, nothing is holding you back but yourself. It is just one step, take that step. And when you benefit, everyone else around you will benefit.”
